Need help choosing the perfect plant for your yard, learning how to care for a favorite perennial, or finding inspiration for a sustainable landscape? The Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox is a free, online resource that provides research-based plant information to help gardeners make smart, sustainable landscape decisions.
This powerful tool includes:
- Detailed profiles of more than 4,600 plants that grow in and around North Carolina
- Information on cultural requirements, landscape uses, and common pests and diseases
- Images from multiple seasons that show plants in real-life conditions—now easier than ever to download, thanks to a new “Download Image” button below each photo
- QR codes that can be used on garden signs, plant labels, and educational materials
- A “Find a Plant” feature that allows you to filter plants by sunlight, soil type, bloom time, and more
- 100+ design galleries showcasing mature plant combinations and inspiring landscapes
A new addition in 2025 is the online map of public gardens, which helps users explore publicly accessible gardens across North Carolina. The map can be found at the bottom of the blue column on the right side of the Plant Toolbox homepage.
Volunteer Power Behind the Plants
Just like the landscapes it helps create, the Plant Toolbox continues to grow—thanks in part to the dedication of NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers.
In 2025, a team of 25 Extension Master Gardener volunteers contributed more than 1,250 hours to expand and enhance the Plant Toolbox. Working under the leadership of Plant Toolbox project manager Dr. Scott Zona, these volunteers:
- Researched and entered plant data
- Wrote and edited plant descriptions
- Gathered and curated seasonal photos
- Proofread entries for accuracy and clarity
- Updated profiles for more than 400 houseplants, as well as roses, fairy garden plants, and green roof plants
Their work helps ensure that the Plant Toolbox remains accurate, up-to-date, and easy to use—serving as a trusted resource for gardeners, educators, landscape professionals, and Extension staff across North Carolina.
