Can participating in community science help support pollinators? The answer is yes!
The Great Southeast Pollinator Census (GSEPC) is a large-scale data-collection effort that helps scientists track pollinator visitations across the Southeast. It's designed so that anyone—regardless of scientific background—can participate and contribute meaningful data.
With more than 5,000 pollinator census counts submitted in August 2025, North Carolinians are proving that every 15-minute observation and data collection can make a difference. The data collected about our invaluable pollinators helps researchers understand pollinator health and effectively strategize for pollinator conservation.
Read Powering Pollinator Conservation Through Community Science in our online Annual Report to learn how NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers are helping support and grow this pollinator conservation effort. You'll learn about our record-breaking year for participating in the GSEPC, and see how anyone can get involved as a citizen scientist this August!
Join Amanda Bratcher, coordinator for the GSEPC in North Carolina and N.C. Cooperative Extension horticulture agent in Lee County, to learn how you can contribute to the GSEPC in 2026 and help scale research impact from the garden to the entire Southeast.
