Description:

Come join us at the Arboretum for the 3rd Annual Native Plant Festival. Learn about what is native to the Cape Fear Region and get tips on what could succeed in your garden. Stroll through the newly created Native Plant Garden, purchase native plants from local vendors, grab a bite at one of the food trucks. For the kids and "young at heart" there will be music, lawn games, story time, and crafts. It’s free, it’s fun, and the grounds are beautiful!

Visit the Arboretum’s varied garden areas, including the newest demonstration garden dedicated to native plants of coastal North Carolina--a great chance to see what native plants might actually look like in your yard. Learn how to plant a home garden incorporating beautiful native plants that thrive in coastal Carolina. Our natives flourish with less water, fertilizer, and insecticides than many imported, non-native plants. Local vendors of native plants currently scheduled are Grizz’s Nursery, Heather Kelejian, Joyce Huguelet, Lumber River Nursery, My Garden Plants Company, Olski’s Heirloom Nursery, and Shelton Herb Farm.

Horticultural experts will give presentations on plants, pollinators, and storm-water management. More than two dozen education exhibitors and vendors will offer information on plants, soil, water, pests and pest control, bees, trees and birds. There will be a seed swap and seed give-away, and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions.

Children and adults alike will love Audubon’s “Discover the Wonder of Birds” exhibit, and the raptor rescue exhibit is bringing a live bird of prey! Librarians from New Hanover County Public Library will bring gardening books that you may check out as if you were at the library, and Susan Savia will bring her guitar and sing songs for children. More activities for children will include garden activities, making crafts, a scavenger hunt, and lawn games.

Three food trucks are scheduled, with sweet and savory offerings: Granny Niece’s Ice Cream, T'Geaux Boys, and The Little Chef Food Truck.

New Hanover Soil & Water Conservation District will offer a rain barrel as a door prize.

Admission is free. Parking is free.
