Every year, more than 4,000 NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers dedicate over 200,000 service hours to helping North Carolinians grow healthier gardens, landscapes, and communities. Their collective knowledge and commitment support sustainable gardening education that reaches more than 300,000 people annually.
While their time is priceless, philanthropic support from individual volunteers, local associations, and friends of the program helps amplify their impact. Together, these generous donors are growing a lasting resource for the future: The NC Extension Master Gardener Endowment.
As of December 31, 2024, the endowment’s market value reached $147,000, thanks to ongoing contributions from supporters across the state. Since its founding in 2007, the endowment has generated nearly $22,000 in interest income, directly supporting volunteer training, education, and recognition through:
- Statewide continuing education initiatives, such as the Plants, Pests, and Pathogen webinar series, strengthen our volunteer’s ability to educate the public
- Scholarships for volunteers in financial need to attend EMG College
- Search for Excellence awards recognizing outstanding volunteer projects
We are deeply appreciative of everyone who donated to the endowment in 2024. Your contributions totaled $10,730, including:
- $7,330 in direct donations
- $3,400 from EMG license plate sales and renewals
The endowment is invested in perpetuity—only the interest earned is spent—ensuring continued support for the Extension Master Gardener program for generations to come. With your help, we can continue to grow this fund to create even more opportunities, including new workshops, resources, and scholarships that empower volunteers to make a difference in every corner of the state.
